In those days, Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” (Luke 1:39-1:42).
Our Lady's visit to her cousin Elizabeth was an act of Charity and Courtesy. Elizabeth was elated at Mary’s travelling in urgency to congratulate she and her husband Zechariah at the news of her long desired pregnancy.
Though She did not know God’s intention in this visit, Mary fearlessly set out because she knew it was His will. She let the Holy Spirit guide Her journey ahead and was unwaveringly obedient to God. Mary abandoned Herself to His will and did not worry. She trusted that God knew the path she was on.
Upon Mary’s arrival, Elizabeth and the child in her womb were filled with the Holy Spirit. The infant (who would be John the Baptist) knew that Mary was carrying the Mother of the Messiah, and he leapt for joy, in utero, the moment Mary entered the house. This event inspires us to reflect on how we can be more like Our Lady, trusting in God's Will and letting the Holy Spirit guide us on our journey through life.
The Feast of the Visitation of Our Lady is on July 2nd.
