September 29th is the Feast Day of Saint Michael the Archangel, also known as Michaelmas Day.
Saint Michael is the patron saint of police, military and paramedics. “Michael” means “Who is like God?”. Within the hierarchy of the angels, at the highest level, Saint Michael is a princely seraph, an angel of supreme power and the leader of God's army.
As our warrior against the Evil One, Saint Michael is who we call on in times of temptation. We can honour him and seek his intercession with the "Chaplet of Saint Michael", and the Prayer to St. Michael:
Sáncte Míchael Archángele, defénde nos in proélio, cóntra nequítiam et insídias diáboli ésto præsídium. Ímperet ílli Déus, súpplices deprecámur: tuque, prínceps milítiæ cæléstis, Sátanam aliósque spíritus malígnos, qui ad perditiónem animárum pervagántur in múndo, divína virtúte, in inférnum detrúde. Ámen.
A long version of prayer to Saint Michael was included in an exorcism to be said by bishops and by those priests authorized to perform exorcisms.
Saint Michael has four responsibilities:
The First is to combat Satan. He defeats Satan on two occasions, first when he ejects Lucifer from Paradise, and secondly in the final battle of the end times when the Antichrist will be defeated by him.
The Second duty is to lead the faithful to heaven at their hour of death.
The Third is to weigh souls on Judgment Day.
His Final duty is to guard the Church and the Chosen People.
