July 22 is the Feast Day of Saint Mary Magdalene. She is the patron saint of converts and repentant sinners, and is the woman from whom Jesus cast out seven demons. Mary Magdalene was a disciple of Christ and witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion, along side the Blessed Virgin Mary. While some theologians believe that Our Lady was the first to speak with the Risen Lord, according to scripture, Mary Magdalene was the first person that Jesus actually spoke to following His resurrection.
The Latin Church considers that Mary Magdalene was the same woman who was caught in adultery and saved, by Jesus, from stoning. The crowd had departed when Jesus called for those who had not sinned to cast the first stone. The Eastern Church believes that Mary Magdalene and the adulterous woman were two different people. St. Mary Magdalene was profoundly transformed from a life burdened by sin, to being a devoted follower of Christ.
