The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. During this month, Mary’s Heart is venerated. It is a symbol of Mary’s purity, compassion and love, especially love for Jesus and humanity. We attempt to obtain a heart like Mary’s, as we do our best to imitate her virtues of humility, faith, obedience, purity, love, patience and devotion to prayer.
Ultimately, when our hearts are united with Mary’s, we will be guided to find our true and lasting home in the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Fatima Immaculate Heart of MaryIn 1917, Our Lady appeared to the three shepherd children in Fatima on the 13th day of each month from May to October. On her second apparition, she revealed her Immaculate Heart. During the six apparitions, Our Lady delivered messages to the world, of prayer, penance, and peace, urging humanity to turn towards God and repent. This wooden statue depicting this miracle was carved by artisans in Val Gardena, Italy. |
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin MaryThis month we also celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. God preserved Mary from the stain of original sin from the moment she was conceived. It is fitting that her body did not know decay and was assumed with her soul into heaven. |
The phenomenon of Jesus’ Transfiguration is also celebrated in August. Atop Mount Tabor, with Peter, John and James, Jesus transfigured, changing His face and garments to a dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appeared also, and God spoke saying,
“This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
These three Feast Days are of great importance and we do well to recall them as the month unfolds. The Transfiguration falls on August 6th, the Assumption on August 15th, and The Feast of the Immaculate Heart is on August 22nd.
