This 15th century icon depicts the Holy Trinity and is based on Genesis 18:1-10, “Abraham’s Hospitality”. In this section of the Bible, Abraham refers to the 3 angels as The Lord, and their visit is traditionally interpreted as an announcement of the Holy Trinity. The angels are dressed similarly, with the same faces, expressions, and hand gestures, and they are each seated at the same level, illustrating equality between Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The angel at the centre, who is wearing the red robe of a priest, is Jesus, with the chalice in front housing His body. Jesus and the Holy Spirit bow to the headship of the Father.
This icon is said to have brought peace to Russia. That peace emanates from the painting as the 3 angels appear to be equally enjoying the others’ company.
This icon image is mounted on a 7" x 9 1/2" wood panel by the monastery monks in Abbaye Saint-Joseph de Clairval in France. Colour of product may vary from the picture.
