Icon of Virgin of the Pieta *NEW RELEASE*

The Icon of the Virgin of the Pieta was painted near the end of the 15th century by Andreas Pavias or Nicolaos Tzafouris. It is based on Michelangelo’s The Pieta, meaning pity or compassion. Capturing the moment when Jesus was taken down from the cross and given to His mother, Mary sorrowfully contemplates her dead Son on her lap. We are invited to mediate on Mary and the angels’ immense grief. 

Mary, Queen of Sorrows, sits on a throne of rock. Jesus’ stiff, lifeless body contrasts with the highly detailed realism of Mary’s draped robes.     

This icon image is mounted on a 7" x 11" wood panel by the monastery monks in Abbaye Saint-Joseph de Clairval in France. Colour of product may vary from the picture.
